I just read this morning something in the news that sounded scary to me. Apparently, a whole bunch of Gmail users were having trouble accessing their Gmail accounts throughout the weekend – that would already get me very nervous – and they finally managed to log in today, just to find out that their accounts had been reset and years worth of emails, attachments, data, chat logs, etc were gone.

Google just published an update stating that this problem affects less than 0.08% of the users, a total of about 150000, and that it will be fixed “in the near future”.

Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.
